Adventures Ahead

Summer Programs at Adventures Ahead

Adventures Ahead was founded in 1996 by community residents seeking to address the educational needs of children in their community. Approximately 30 children in grades K-6 now participate in regular tutoring and recreation programs.

The goal of Adventures Ahead is to achieve grade-appropriate literacy among children K-6 who are enrolled in the tutoring program, and to nurture each child’s enjoyment of reading as a lifelong venture.

Inner-City Arts

Most inner-city schools cannot afford quality instruction in art, music and physical education.  For the past three years we have been able to sponsor week-long “camps” where volunteer instructors teach skills in drama, dance, music, arts and crafts, basketball and soccer.  We advertise at our local elementary schools where we receive an enthusiastic welcome from principals, teachers and parents.

Reading Buddies

Reading Buddies read one-on-one with students in our Adventures Ahead After School Tutoring Program.  It is amazing how much children thrive on the individual attention and focused instruction that volunteers give them.  And it is a tremendous joy to be part of a child learning to read or developing a love for reading.

We are in need of Reading Buddies who can commit one hour a week to reading with a child on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.  All Reading Buddies must complete a background check.
