Normandie Beautiful
Creating Safe Routes to School
In 2022, the Normandie Beautiful project received a $26M grant from the California Transportation Commission to take a two-mile stretch of Normandie Avenue off the City's High Injury Network -- the 6% of streets that account for 70% of serious pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

Redeemer Community Partnership organized years of community outreach to develop the project proposal. The plan will repair sidewalks, install pedestrian lighting, plant street trees, install signalized pedestrian crossings, landscape center medians, and create two north-south low-stress bikeways on adjacent streets among other improvements.

The project will directly benefit 9,000 students attending 14 schools along a 2.5 mile stretch of Normandie Ave. This vital project intersects with the $12.7M Jefferson Beautiful project beginning to create a network of safe, walkable streets in our South Central LA neighborhood.

Unfortunately, despite receiving funding in 2022, the City of LA has not assigned a project manager to begin planning. Meanwhile, other projects funded at the same time have been underway for 18-months.

Reimagining the High Injury Network
Since 2020, there have been over 250 community-documented collisions along Normandie Avenue. Improvements proposed by the community and incorporated into the Normandie Beautiful project will provide traffic calming designs, including two adjacent low-stress bike lanes, aiming to reduce collisions and promote pedestrian safety.
$27.7 Million Dedicated to 2.5 Mile Normandie Corridor
Planning for Normandie Beautiful informally began in 2010 when residents initiated efforts to win $1.2M from the LA Community Redevelopment Agency to repair sidewalks and improve infrastructure.

In 2019, concentrated planning and research for Normandie Beautiful began, with in-person and virtual community engagement. In 2022, the state formally granted the City of LA $27 million for infrastructure improvements.
Ongoing Community Engagement and Advocacy
Since Summer 2019, we have knocked on over 400 doors, conducted over 100 one-on-one conversations, and administered 61 surveys to better understand our neighbors' desires for Normandie Ave.

Additionally, over 15 community workshops and neighborhood meetings have been facilitated to learn more about our community's experiences, share updates, and engage over various design elements.

Local youth have also been taking on safe streets advocacy to ensure our local officials dedicate the promised resources and staffing to this project.
